Top 10 Favorite Robot Movies

Share:

Lakewood, Colorado—National Robotics Week is a great excuse to delve into the captivating world of robots in cinema. Some of these cinematic treasures might have slipped through the cracks of your memory, but they're absolutely worth a reboot. Zooming in on the last two decades, here are my top 10 favorite robot movies — split into two categories: great for date nights and kid-friendly viewing.

Minority Report 1280x720

Date Night Picks

For an evening of thought-provoking storytelling or a little adrenaline boost, here are some robot-themed picks to pair with popcorn:

1. Minority Report (2002)

In a future where crimes are stopped before they occur, Tom Cruise’s character, John Anderton, finds himself on the run from his own department. The film features advanced tech, including the unforgettable spider-like drones used for surveillance and ID scans. A gripping thriller exploring free will, fate — and nail-biting suspense.

2. I, Robot (2004)

Loosely inspired by Isaac Asimov’s work, this one stars Will Smith as a detective who suspects a robot of murder. It’s a fast-paced mix of mystery, action, and big questions about autonomy and artificial intelligence.

3. Ex Machina (2014)

A young programmer is invited to test the consciousness of an advanced humanoid A.I. The story unfolds into a tense psychological drama that dives deep into ethics, identity, and manipulation. Beautifully filmed and deeply unsettling.

4. Her (2013)

In a near future, a lonely writer falls in love with an intelligent operating system designed to meet his emotional needs. This gentle, poignant film explores connection, intimacy, and the increasingly blurred lines between humans and technology.

5. District 9 (2009)

More alien than android — but with gritty exo-suits and a powerful commentary on tech integration and social inequality. A unique, thought-provoking film about discrimination, identity, and transformation.

WALL E 1280x720

Kid-Friendly Favorites

These are some entertaining and heartwarming robot-themed movies I’ve enjoyed with the younger ones. I like knowing what I’m getting into before hitting “play” — no surprise post-bedtime deep chats, if you know what I mean. I recommend checking Common Sense Media to confirm if these are a good fit for your family.

6. WALL·E (2008)

This little Pixar gem follows a waste-collecting robot with a big heart in a deserted future Earth. It’s sweet, thoughtful, and packed with silent storytelling that hits home about the environment and the human spirit.

7. Big Hero 6 (2014)

Meet Baymax — everyone’s favorite inflatable healthcare robot. He and his genius inventor Hiro join forces with friends to form a tech-savvy superhero team. Lots of laughs, heart, and a few tear-jerking moments.

8. Robots (2005)

In a world full of quirky mechanical beings, a young inventor sets off to make a difference. It's colorful, imaginative, and full of positive messages about creativity and persistence.

9. Robot Dreams (2024)

Dialogue-free — need I say more? (Okay, I will.) We loved Minuscule in our house, and Robot Dreams carries that same magic. It’s a beautifully animated story about a dog in 1980s NYC who builds a robot best friend. Their friendship is joyful and sweet… until they’re separated. A quiet, heartfelt tale about love, loss, and growing up — for kids and adults alike.

10. Ron’s Gone Wrong (2021)

Every kid has a “B*Bot” — a smart, connected, digital friend — except Barney, whose bot is glitchy and out of sync. Turns out, imperfection makes for the best kind of friendship. It’s funny, warm, and gently critical of the world of always-online living.

While this list highlights movies from the past 20 years, I can’t leave out the iconic classics like Star Wars, Blade Runner, The Terminator, and Short Circuit. They helped shape the genre — and still deserve a spot in any robot movie marathon.

Whether you're in the mood for a thrilling night in or a feel-good family flick, I hope one of these finds its way to your screen this Robotics Week!
